Hello and welcome to Bad Domain Thief...a place where victims can tell their stories and expose the thugs behind them!

No, that is not me smiling devilishly in the photo, although it does bear some resemblance!  I'd like you all to meet "Domiana"; a remarkable and beautiful woman born on "Planet Host."  I came to know Domiana through a series of my own unfortunate events, and we have become good friends.  She's smiling because she's about to gorge on her favorite thing...."domain thugs."  Domiana loves all kinds of domain thugs!  She loves them tall, short, fat or slim; professional or amateur; career or hobbyist.  It doesn't matter to her because Domiana unfortunately lost her Name Parents when she was very young, and doesn't exactly know where she fits in.  As a young domainette, she had hopes of growing up to be the next Google or Yahoo, never imagining that she'd be orphaned as a small child.  Now, as she grows old and time passes, she only wishes for one thing.  She wishes to find someone to marry; someone to complete her; someone who will steal their weight in famous domains just for her....who will risk serious consequences for her, and who will hijack valuable three letter domains and place them on her pillow while she sleeps.  She's desperate for someone to make her famous by stealing top level domains that will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars on ebay! It's unfortunate, but her misaligned childhood has offered Domiana little or no self esteem and she often seeks comfort in these subversive partners.  She is just too set in her ways to change.

My sympathy goes out to Domiana, and so I have created this Blog in an attempt at finding Domiana true love, before she expires.  I'd like Domiana to find her soulmate, no matter how criminal he may be, before the law gets out of hand and begins throwing her prospective matches in jail!  I fear that day is coming soon, hence, time is of the essence.  Please, help me to help Domiana by sharing any experiences you've had with a thug that might be worthy of Domiana's love.  Please be as brief, but detailed as you can, so that Domiana can begin to compile a list of exciting suitors from which she can eventually choose her soulmate.  After she reads your submissions, she will pick her top contenders and eventually she will ask for his hand in marriage.  Her plans are to have a Lawyer write up her nuptuals, and then for a Judge to marry them.  She may even need the police to control the well wishing, but losing thugs, who just didn't make it to the first date. Her invitees, of course, will be all the new friends she's made here on "Bad Domain Thief."  After all, it's the least she could do to say "thank you" for your generous support and advice.

You will know if your domain thief sets off a sparkle for Domiana, as her replies will reflect it.  Please be true to Domiana and expose only real life situations and domain thefts.  This is serious business, as Domiana has spent several thousand dollars already for her preliminary pre-nuptials and anticipates even more for the wedding! She asks that you be as forthcoming as you can by listing where her hopefuls live (if you know), as much of their name as you care to divulge, how you came to know them, and a list of the attractive domains they have creatively stolen. The stolen domain list is very important to her, as she will make her final decision based on that.  Yes, she is a bit of a "domain digger", but so what, aren't we all?

Please bear with us as we learn to navigate and grow our new blog territory.  Wishing you all good luck in helping Domiana find her true thug, and in doing so, exposing the crime of domain theft. Through this blog I am hoping to incite legislation to enact remedies to protect victims of this often overlooked, but very serious felony.  Enjoy the fantasy!

I just had my domain swiped. Was out of country on an email-free holiday, only to find when I got home that my domain had expired and some domain">http://www.emergencysoft.com">domain thief in Armenia had snared it the minute it became available.

Hey, fair play, right? My bad for not ensuring I had an auto-renew on a PR:4 domain, so now it's his. Fair enough.

I duly went out and got a new domain, http://www.natnotes.com">http://www.natnotes.com">http://www.natnotes.com, and moved my files across to it, and started the arduous business of relinking the site, only to find a few days later that he COPIED my entire site to his.

All logos. All images. All text. Four years worth of articles, all swiped and plonked down in an effort to fool old readers into thinking I was still there.

    What a right bastard.

What can be done? Pretty much nothing. His hosting company has been informed, his domain registrar, my readers, in ward linkers, etc etc... but unless I want to file an expensive international lawsuit, I've got to take it on the chin as an expensive lesson.

    Or do I...?

Wow, that's horrible, but am I correct in understanding you allowed the domain to expire?  Was it in a grace period that the name was stolen? In this case, you may have some recourse in asking the Registrar (GoDaddy?) to check into it.  They have the authority to reverse the move if they feel it was in their error.  But don't hold your breath with GoDaddy.  They  aren't terribly cooperative in my experience.  However, if it was their fault in letting the name go while it was in a grace period, you would absolutely have legal recourse, and you should pursue it.

There should have been emails sent to you at least a month prior to expiration.  If you did not receive these, I suggest you check the security of your email, as your email might have been hacked by the thief, who deleted the expiry notices from your box in hopes you would forget to renew, and he could then pick up the name easily.  In your case, you're right in that there's not much else you can do to recover the name in the case of expiration through the owners fault.  Unless your site was copyrighted AND you feel like starting an international lawsuit, again there's not much you can do but what you've already done.  However, you could let us know specifically what else you know about the thief, either business or personal-wise so that we could all look out.  You could also possibly try to "buy back" your domain from the thief; a repulsive thought, however it has been done before.

The key is to continue bringing forth these internet crimes and exposing their details in hopes of educating others.  With enough of these stories we are on our way to pressuring congress to enact easier remedies for the victims, who are truly left bare naked.  I always say, the day a Judge has their domain stolen, is the day I want to be filing my lawsuit!  Best of Luck, BDT admin
